Inaugural delegate of Brightest Young Minds
Mitchell was an inaugural delegate of the Brightest Young Minds Foundation and an executive member of the BYM project, The Bipolar Expedition. As a leading advocate for improved services for young Australians experiencing mental illness, he has spoken at a variety of international events and advised key national organizations and government bodies.
Since BYM 2007, Mitchell has continued to work extensively in the area of youth advocacy with a primary focus on contributing to an equitable health and education strategy regardless of cultural or socio-economic differences. To meet this goal he has served on various state and national advisory boards for Beyondblue, NSW Red Cross, Headspace and the Australian Youth Climate Change Coalition as well as two peak bodies, the National Mental Health Consumer and Carer Forum, an independent body advising on the development of mental health policy and service delivery in Australia, and The Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) which aims to provide policy advice to government and the broader community on issues affecting the youth sector.
As a natural progression of his focus on youth advocacy, Mitchell currently represents the AYAC on the for the Australian Youth Forum (AYF) Engagement Steering Committee run by the Australian Government as a communication channel to gain youth input on the issues that affect their lives both now and in the future. He is also continuing his specific commitment to youth mental health as a member of the Headspace Clinical Advisory Committee, chaired by Australian of the Year, Prof. Pat McGorry. The current focus of this committee is the launching of the first International Youth Mental Health Conference to be held in Australia on the 29th and 30th of July, 2010
